Georgia: Macon and Savannah

Bridge across the Savannah River
Posted by Thane
We were looking for a mid-size town on our way to Savannah to spend the night and decided on Macon. What a great town. A lot of wealth here at one time apparently from the look of the old houses. The old downtown is making somewhat of a resurgence but has a way to go. We had time to visit St Josephs Cathedral and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
This cathedral was built over 100 years ago, has gold leaf inlays and marble columns. Check out the virtual tour link of the interior by clicking on the link for St Josephs Cathedral. It is amazing with marble and gold leaf-rivals the duomos in Italy!

The Georgia Music Hall of Fame had so many inductees that I'm thinking that this is the only place music is made! They had a special exhibit for Otis Redding-God I miss that guy. We heard him sing "Dreams to Remember" from the Monterey Pops Festival on a large screen.

......James Brown

After Macon we traveled on to Savannah to a hotel in the old historic area. From there we were able to take the narrated trolley tour of the city. This city was England's 13th colony founded in 1733. On a bluff overlooking the Savannah river it has 21 of it's original 24 town squares still intact with huge Live Oak trees and marble statues. The Savannah college of Art and Design is located within the historic area and with it's 7000 students it occupies many of the old buildings.
We went to Tybee Island for a little beach breather, the water is warm and the breezes cool.Heading to Charleston, South Carolina next.

Had no idea Macon was so important in Southern and US music. Always think of New Orleans, Mussle Shoals, Nashville, maybe Memphis. Guess there are a lot of musicians with great talent all over the US really.

Sounds like you guys are having a wonderful experience! Good for you! You reminded me of our trip to Savannah several years ago. My husband's grandmother grew up on Tybee Island. Savannah was one of my favorite cities. I just adored the beautiful town squares, moss draped oaks and the lovely old homes. Thanks for sharing!
Have fun!
